Short Resumee

Zeno Geradts works since 1991 at the Netherlands Forensic Institute as a forensic scientist.  He is expert witness in image analysis and biometrics (e.g. facial comparison) as well as R&D coordinator in digital evidence. In 2002 he received a PhD from the University of Utrecht based on research on computational matching of images from shoeprints, toolmarks, drugs pills and cartridge cases. He started in toolmarks where he wrote several hundreds of reports and in 1995 he switched to firearms and since 1997 he works at the digital evidence and biometrics department. 

At the American Academy of Forensic Sciences he has been chairman of the Engineering Section and since 2008 he has been chairman of the new section Digital Evidence and Multimedia. Currently he is in Director the section. He is chairman of the Euopean Network of Forensic Science Institutes Forensic IT working group. He (co-) authored  in many publications and presented a wide variety of papers and workshops and is active on casework as expert witness and projects in digital evidence and multimedia (such as camera identification, repairing video streams, image analysis, heart beat detection from CCTV).

Working Experience

1999-now Netherlands Forensic Institute, section Digital Evidence:

Forensic scientist in the areas (video) image processing, photogrammetry and biometrics. R&D-coordinator of projects on Digital Evidence. approximately 30 cases a year on image processing, CCTV-systems, face comparison. Chairman of ENFSI Forensic IT Working group, Director of AAFS Digital Evidence and Multimedia Section, 

1997-1999   Netherlands Forensic Institute, section Digital Evidence: forensic scientist in the field of (video) image processing. Approximately 50 cases a year.

1995-1997 Netherlands Forensic Institute, section Firearms : forensic scientist and involved in R&D-projects on automatic comparison of cartridge cases and bullets. Approximately 40 cases a year. 

1992 – 1995 Netherlands Forensic Institute, section Toolmarks : forensic scientist in the field of shoeprints and toolmarks. In 1994 appointed by the Dutch court to expert witness under permanent oath. R&D-projects in image databases of shoe prints and toolmarks. Approximately 100 cases a year. 

1988- 1992 OCE Nederland BV Venlo
R&D-projects image processing in digital photocopiers. Furthermore involved in literature research for patent infringement, new developments and new inventions.

1995 Young investigator award : National Research Institute of Police Science in Tokyo for a project on video image restoration in which we tested several methods, like MTV and Maximum Entropy.
